Sceptre Display

Post by Zema Bus »

Back when I got a 27" Sceptre display for my gaming machine I liked it so much I decided to get one for my primary machine. They look identical, but something inside is different. This one periodically (well, often) doesn't wake up from sleep, the power light stops blinking as if it did wake up but the screen stays off. When it does that I have to pull the power cord out of the external power supply until the power light goes out then plug it back in. That always works but it's annoying. Aside from that it works great. I did a search on this issue and I found that this is a common random issue with Sceptre displays in general and it's just a luck of the draw. Eventually I'll get another 27" non-Sceptre display and then the Sceptre can be used for something else or just stored as a backup.

I guess if you get one that works, they are good. I liked mine, until it developed those vertical red lines on the backlighting. It still works, but will start up with those lines. If I use it long enough, say, for hours (with power management turned off) at that point a smack or two at the back will bring it back to normal. So far it has always stayed that way until it cools off again. So it's not a total loss. I was too lazy to pursue returning it, ship it to bumfuck whereverthefuck, get jerked around or get a replacement that does the same thing. Better to just use it like it is for the other computer.

I finally had enough of having to unplug/replug the Sceptre display attached to my main system about every other time I tried to wake it up (and sometimes even when it does wake up, it wakes up to an 800x600 resolution), so I got a 27" Gigabyte display. I swapped out the problem Sceptre on my main machine with the good Sceptre from my game machine, and then connected the Gigabyte display to my gaming machine.

This is the one I got

I should have done this sooner instead of just putting up with it

So I guess Sceptre is out, forevermore (why take a chance on anything from them again).

I hope that one lasts for you. Gigabyte makes good stuff, though I'm not sure how far the word "make" could be applied here. I'm sure they don't manufacture the actual panels, moreover, I wouldn't be surprised if the same ones MSI and Acer and friends get. The specs of that one sure look similar to my MSI display.

Speaking of which, I've been very happy with my current MSI 27 inch. I set it up to my liking and it works, every day! (it shouldn't be amazing... but I was really soured after all the shit I encountered related to my build last year). My case was wrong (both in being mickey mouse, and the board not fitting up with the back of the case quite right). I wasn't happy with the PSU I bought. I had ESD issues that the Assrock video card was sensitive to. The Assrock card died in 31 days. Then my Sceptre display.

After launching Plasma I noticed the Gigabyte display is defaulting to 2560x1440, I realized it it when I was moving a window over to the other display and saw the size change. I didn't notice that in MATE, I don't think I've had it in Plasma for at least two years.

That's good, as long as text is big enough for your eyes. It took me a long time to get off 1024x768, just because it was what I was used to. That was in the CRT days, and my newer monitor did 1280x1024. One day I decided to up it and got used to it

The text is a little small but really not that bad. I remember back in the late 90's when I was working for a document scanning company, I ended up on various different computers, some running Win95 and some Win 3.1. One time I ended up on a Win 3.1 machine with a super high resolution, it was great having all the space on the screen but the text was so small it was kind of hard to read.
