I heard about that... but I don't think FreeBSD on a laptop for most people is going to be practical. Being able to pay a couple of developers for a year isn't really going to make that more viable. It's not just drivers, but the kernel APIs.
If I had a laptop I'd probably leave the Windows OS on it. (not a fan of laptops or windows, but there's always something that doesn't work right on Linux)
