Witchfire

Post by Grogan »

I saw a mention of this in some discussion somewhere. I looked it up and it seemed like it would be a pretty good game. It's been "Early Access" for more than a year.

While it's of decent quality, I don't think I'm going to play it. I was expecting more of an FPS, RPG-like game, not a "fight waves of bullet sponge enemies as you traverse, run out of ammo and lose all your stuff when you die and have to quit" kind of game. It's one of those stupid games where you lose all the currency accumulated ("witchfire" in this case, which enables you to fight magic with magic sort of thing) and you have to go and find where you died and pick up all your gear again or you'll lose it. I didn't want to do that (I was wandering around and it would have been a walk) so I quit.

I'll never make any kind of progress to even get to see all the areas of this game (you lose progress when you quit if you don't complete the level... you'll spawn back at the safe house sort of thing), so I'm thinking of just getting my 50 bucks back.

It's too bad they followed this stupid formula.

Well now... I decided to try it once more, and my stuff was still there after I left the "Hermatorium" (safe house type place), there was an icon on the map. I got all the Witchfire I lost back from that pickup, too. I was expecting that to be gone after I quit like that.

I just fought enemies for a while and picked up what I could. There may be more or less ammo and health elixer drops next time, and I had more pickups this time. I don't really have time to get into this at the moment, so I just went back to the portal to the Hermatorium and quit, while I still have everything. Your ammo resets when you go back there, I noticed I'm full again.

That just saved it from being refunded. I will give this an honest try after all.

Graphics look good. Does it get progressively more difficult?

I'd be pretty certain of that, though I haven't gotten far. You level up and get better gear I think. I'm just with the default assault rifle type starting weapon for the "Butcher" character I chose. I probably could have chosen an easier one to start with, as this character starts the game off at level 6 whereas some of the others start the game at level 1. I think two of them say "beginner friendly" but Butcher looked friendlier with more damage and health type stuff.

Yes, the graphics are half decent. Not fabulous, but good. At least 7 fucktonnes better than Borderlands 4.

It's Unreal Engine 4. Performance and responsiveness is pretty good with everything on Ultra and no gimmicks like FSR and clever downscaling etc.

I hope I can get to see all the areas. I'm not really conducive to progressing in these kinds of games. I'm more likely to quit as soon as I can get to a safe place.
