New X File Explorer

Post by Grogan »

I've been very glad to see that my essential/favourite file manager is still being worked on. However, when version 2 was released, I resisted it because it's something I don't want to change. Now it's at version 2.1.1 so I decided to give it a try. I first backed up my configuration (~/.foxrc and ~/.config/xfe) in case it buggered that up because if my painstaking, manually edited styling didn't work I was going back to my old 1.46.2 version. The colour sheme didn't work out exactly, there are now more areas where there is no distinction between them (e.g. scroll bar area, some buttons) but it's close enough that I can tweak it easily enough.

I didn't upgrade FOX, it's still fine with FOX 1.6.57 (1.6.59 is the current version... I'm glad to see that's still being maintained too... maybe it does have a chance of compiling on aarch64, I wasn't even going to try it)

It seems to be the same good old file manager, though my first impressions on seeing that Places view in the left pane were "eww eww eww!" but there's a setting in Preferences to turn that off and only show the tree, or select Tree by default at startup. I've turned that off now, I don't like "Places" panes at all (like for example gtk3 file chooser dialogs). The context menus still have the things I like in them, but have more separator lines for easy reading. Also the scroll bars have notches on them to make them easier to see (since I use all black, that's good). The missing icons are just greyed out, they become active when there's a valid action. It has actual tabs now too (where it shows the working directory "build" with a prominent outline... clicking + would open a new tab). I may actually use that instead of opening another instance of the program.

So far, it's a good upgrade.

Fuckin-A... 3 minutes and I have X File Explorer on my Raspberrypi. Both FOX and XFE compiled without any poking (I sent them to /usr/local) and I copied the configs from my PC so it's the same as above.

Now I am WHOLE on this thing. I detest Thunar and was mostly just using a terminal to do file management.

I don't think I've ever tried XFE, I'll check it out :)

I've been using it forever, since it was formerly X Wincommander in 1999. It was one of the million things that Mandrake had back then (I think it was 6 or 7 cd's in a boxed set... Bobguy used to send me copies in snail mail)

If you want to try it, compile FOX and XFE yourself (even if provided, which is unlikely, distros don't do that right... you have to --with-xft or you won't get freetype font support in FOX, and consequently XFE).

Thanks Grogan. I may have used X Wincommander then back in those days when I was using Mandrake. I was on a Mandrake mailing list and one of the members sent me a Mandrake CD since I didn't have a CD burner at the time.
