I remember that episode where he was absent and then at the end of the episode we see him in the infirmary recovering from appendicitis. Turns out he had it for real.

Ahh... that can be an emergency if it ruptures. My dad had that happen in the 80's... emergency surgery. I guess it was something they could easily work into the story plot to cover for him
