I picked up these two games after hearing good things about them. Darkenstein 3D is free, inspired by the old Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. I watched someone playing it, it has a lot of humor like Serious Sam. Metal Hellsinger has some good heavy metal music to go along with the gameplay and the graphics look good. Lots of demonic enemies. It's on sale until Nov 10th, $9 US for the base game, I got the bundle with 3 DLC's for $21.

That Darkenstein 3D looks pretty good. You should get your money's worth on that one :-)

I might try that.

That Metal Hellsinger will be too arcade-like for me, by the look of it.

I tried Darkenstein. Indeed, it's like Wolfenstein 3D. I just wandered around, opening doors, going in rooms, shot some Nazi dogs etc. until I found a key, opened a barred gate and got a checkpoint save. It's pretty good, for what it's supposed to be. I'll play that for brief periods. I always get lost in those kind of games, forgetting which doors I came through.

My only criticism is making it all pixelated on purpose. I'm not a fan of that, it's completely unnecessary. I don't find that technique to be "artistic", just fugly. It probably took more effort to make it fugly than simple, but decent

With Unity, you can have nice graphics, just that it's expensive, the engine isn't really made for it. Kona 2 Brume is a good example of that.

I watched some of those Metal Hellsinger videos, and some of the vocals in the tracks are straining voices so bad they sound like donald duck

(that kind of metal)

I'm tempted, it looks and sounds nice, but my nervous system doesn't like those kind of games anymore where it's constant combat that keeps getting more and more intense until you can't play it.

I played Metal Hellsinger for a little bit, it's not the worst game I've played but it's not something I'd probably play all the time, though I will play it again. Yeah, the combat does seem to get increasingly frantic. A little into a fight with an enemy you'll get an 'E' prompt, when you press E it'll restore your health. I died a few times and respawned where I left off so I didn't lose progress. I'm not 100% sure but it seems like you don't have to defeat a boss enemy to complete a level, I died while fighting one and then it took me to the final score screen. It's single player but it shows a leaderboard at the end of a match, I don't know what that's based on, I guess the 10 players with the closest score.

I started Darkenstein 3D, not enough time tonight to get very far. I liked the chicken sound when I chose the easy difficulty lol!

Heheh, yes, me too. I noticed that and got a chuckle. It's better than the baby hat and pacifier at least
