The Outer Worlds 2

I've been waiting for this game, but I didn't realize it was coming on Oct. 29.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1449 ... _Worlds_2/

Because I pre-purchased the Premium Edition (tonight lol) I get immediate "early access" but it doesn't unlock for another 14 hours (that would be noon, Eastern, my time). The premium edition is like a season pass, I get the planned two expansions etc.

I have to say, this is a GOOD example of how to use the Unreal Engine (as was the Outer Worlds remaster with UE4). I have played for a few hours now and this game works and performs very well, with nice looking graphics. I have all the graphics settings maxed, but I didn't bother enabling "hardware raytracing" though, because this is Unreal 5 which uses Lumen and I know better. That's good for a bit of software rendered ray tracing (bravo for that), but it's got to be the worst implementation of ray tracing I've ever seen when hardware is enabled.

I'm using my wonderful proton_tkg_10.16.r0.g265554a9 (which has Wine's new native "inproc-sync", using the ntsync kernel module) which is unfortunately about 3 weeks old, because current proton upstream wine builds have broken Steam integration (that bogus steam.exe that gets copied to the prefix won't run). It's still my best proton tool for everything but Borderlands 4 and God of War Ragnarok.

Unlike Borderlands 4 (also Unreal 5), this game likes it. It seems to be pretty straight forward, it has no Denuvo or anything. This is published by Xbox Game Studios too. Say what you want about Microsoft, but so far they have been one of the least nasty game publishers lately. (Bethesda, Xbox Game Studios)

The game is just like the last one in most respects. Most of the stuff still works the same way. It still has old school manual saves too. It's a different story with different characters though.

It's cartoony style graphics but it's nice and colourful. Tasteful, artistic at least.

First time I've seen "Advanced Access". I interpreted that edition as only providing immediate access rather than having to wait for the official unlocking time, and so I got the regular edition since I can't play tonight. Oh well, I'll just have to get the expansions when they come out.

Oh well, it will be some time before the first expansion.

When you get to try this, you should probably use Proton Experimental as Proton 9.x has older vkd3d-proton etc.

I'm just over 5 hours into this and I have to say I'm not finding it as interesting, engaging, rewarding or endearing as the first one (The Outer Worlds remaster). It seems to be a trend these days, game studios get new writers and the games are never the same again.

It could just be off to a slower start though, it's a longer game. The next planet could be more interesting.

It's still a pretty good game. I enjoyed it more tonight. Part of it, for me, may have just been that it's a weaker drug than Borderlands

I finally started this game, I was only going to play it for an hour then switch to BL4, but I played it for almost 2.5 hrs, to the part where the character is picked up after floating in space for 10 years. So much talking, and I just wanted to jump in and start shooting stuff

Yes, it does have some long, one sided NPC conversations where your reply choices are trivial. Keep at it though, it does get more interesting. A much more relaxed pace than Borderlands.

Reading messages and shit on terminals is pretty entertaining, the ridiculous corporate fascist dystopian shit etc.

I had to fight a big boss last night, Brigadier Montelli (of the Protectorate) in a big armour suit. Well, I didn't have to, but I chose not to go and do the alternative suggested by this sniveling toad that didn't want me to kill him. I killed him too for being a whiny little bitch (threatening to turn the station's defenses on me and stuff). That was probably the most tedious thing so far, he had armour and the numbers showed he had 1500 health and a skull for being overleveled. Playing on easy though I was able to do it, I just had to watch my health and use my inhaler thing a few times. I had bought lots of "short rounds" for my repeater rifle.

I got a fucking "achievement" for being tricked into going into this rift thing and dying. On the next planet, the landing pad is way the fuck up high and the infrastructure around it is all war torn and broken and you have to find a way down. You have to kind of jump down on some rocks and go around and you come to this broken tram station. The elevator you're supposed to take is not obvious, but when you enter there's this rift. In games, you're supposed to go up to those kinds of things! I wasn't sure, I just wanted to see if there was a "Press E" but I got sucked in.

"A Stiff in the Rift - Jumped into a rift (and died)"

I played this for a little while tonight, and after I landed on Paradise Island I was looking around and thought if only Borderlands 4 looked this good. Then later when I was fighting some alligator looking creatures I was wishing I had some of my guns from Borderlands lol!

Yes, it's really stingy with the guns at the start. The first sniper rifle you get (look at vendors and machines) isn't too bad, your game will get better once you get that. You should get a triple barrel shotgun fairly early, it sucks, but it's at least good damage up close for strong enemies. I chose to kill de Vries and took her sniper rifle, which is better. Also I have some decent assault rifles now, and a heavy revolver that does nearly as much damage as my best sniper rifle lol

It wasn't as engaging at the start as the first one and it gets better. My only complaint would be some cunty traversal, and at times not knowing what I'm supposed to be doing, or how I'm supposed to get to the waypoint marker... then I figure out that it's just a general area waypoint etc. I started just searching for info and finding walkthroughs instead of wasting time not noticing that obscure ventilation hatch or whatever it is.

I've been playing it the past few nights and I'm enjoying it more now that things are progressing.

(especially since I've been staying away from bad drugs like Borderlands 4  )

I'm making a lot of nasty choices in this game. Those choices are usually the easier ones. What often happens is that I'm pissed off at what I had to go through to get there, and take the "[Attack]" conversation choice and don't even listen to them

Oh, and I caused (allowed because I didn't know what I was supposed to be doing to prevent it) a space station to fall on a populated town and obliterate it. *shrug*

I got a bunch of resistance members killed because I ignored advice on not to blow up a transport carrying Protectorate Sovereigns (they were a bit upset and went on a blitz to eradicate the entire cell). It was generous of me to sacrifice them to strike a heavy blow to the Protectorate :-) (I didn't know that was going to happen though, when she warned me)

However, the one time I thought I'd be nice, sparing a Protectorate official that seemed like a nice guy begging for his life (despite the quest giver wanting to kill him because he'll rat us out) we got betrayed. I'm glad I chose that, really, because it gave me more enemies to fight. It's gotten easier with better weapons. Also, I made sure I shot that sniveling toad first (he was very weak) which was gratifying.

The planet I'm on right now, seems more like the old game. Easier to traverse (though you still have to find a route through some blocked areas etc.) and similar "feel" to it. Typical winding paths, with pockets of enemies. Except for being unable to cross rock faces and stuff, you can just go towards your waypoint most of the time.

Praetor is the planet.

outerworlds2_praetor.jpg

The previous planet, Dorado was pretty cool, but more difficult to traverse. Here's a shot I took a while back, at night time with all the glowing crystals and shit.

Incentive for you to play it :-)

The Order and their Latin sounding names for things. "The Calcaduceus"

I have to liberate the Archive from the Protectorate (giving it back to The Order of Ascendants) so I can process rift calculation data using the powerful computer there. It was kind of cool how I found it, I picked up a data pad from that guy in an alcove when I entered the place, so I knew he had the device when I saw him. I was just opening all the doors I could, searching, looting and there he was in the privy moaning and groaning with gastric distress. I talked to him and he wanted me to grant him safe passage out (I'd already massacred everyone in the facility) in exchange for the Calcaduceus. Nah, I'm massacring all Protectorate personnel and I don't like sniveling cowards.

outerworlds2_calcaduceus.jpg

This game is great, I'm on this icy planet named Cloister now. They almost blew it at the start with me, but there are some good characters and writing. The companion loyalty quests are pretty good. I've got an ex-Order inquisitor/assassin type named Marisol, and a twisted cultist named Aza who is very stabby and violent. I also have Niles and the robot Valerie, but those two ladies are more fun and interesting companions to take with me on missions. There are still 2 more companion slots, so there are undiscovered ones yet.

At least you relieved him of his gastric distress

Speaking of companions, before I set out on that last mission I got those same two companions, but they didn't appear on the planet with me and I couldn't find a way to summon them in the menus. They might have saved me from a few deaths :)

As far as I know, the only way is on the ship, when you depart. Fast travel back there, go to the exit bay and change companions, then fast travel back as close as you can etc.

You have to make sure they are selected, the game will let you proceed with none. Also, if you don't uncheck the previous selected companions, it won't change them when you click others. (I've had that happen)

So I finished this game tonight. Siding with The Order of Ascendants was the right thing to do, they rebuilt the Arcadia colonies (you get some story after the game completes, with the results of your travails, like in Fallout games). It probably also would have been viable to make peace between Auntie's Choice and The Order and have them as allies fighting the protectorate, but... nah.

Since the game is over at this point anyway, I decided to sacrifice myself to close the rift and save Arcadia instead of letting someone else.

47.6 hours game play. I'd have had more quests if I didn't murder everyone though

There's no more XP or skill points after level 30 anyway though, which I hit the other night. That's one thing I don't like as much about this game, the skill point system. The first game gave you 10 skill points to distribute into all of those things at every level, so you could keep incrementing the ones you want as you go. This game only gives 2, and therefore there are only 60 in total.

I found that most of the time, no matter how many points I put in speech, engineering, hacking, lockpick etc. the next hard thing I encounter would always seem to be one more skill level than I need anyway and I have to use another option. So once I firmly realized, I said fuck that and started putting points in Guns and got that maxed out to 20. Each skill point in guns gives you 10% damage and 1% armor penetration, so I'll take 200% thank you very much. My game got much easier and less tedious after I started socking points into guns, I tell you.

In the first game, putting points in guns wasn't as significant, it didn't directly give you more damage but other bonuses, like critical hit chance and stuff.

So I started a new playthough and I'm going to try to be a nicer person this time

Damn, all that time, I could have had "Plasma Thruster" jump boots. It's right near the beginning of the game, not far from the first town on Paradise Island, on the first planet Eden. I just never encountered the quest, "A Final Death for Gravity". I was just loosely heading for my waypoint back to town to turn in the bounty quest (destroy drones) when I came across some people atop this high platform, and one of them jumped to his death. The others wanted me to take his jump boots and get a part to fix the platform so they could lower it.

outerworlds2_plasmajumpboots.jpg

That top slot was locked and I thought I was going to acquire something later in game (I had the bottom one, the Rift Modulator which opens rifts) but never found the top one. Duh. I sure could have used those... I wondered why I had things that looked like I was supposed to be able to reach but couldn't. It didn't prevent me from completing any objectives, but I remember a puzzle I couldn't do because I couldn't jump to where the rift was creating a walkway for me.

I have my companions now, looks like I just missed selecting them on the screen that comes up when leaving the ship. I fast traveled back to the ship as you suggested and then exited again, and there they were. On my way to a destination I came across a body and got a bio-gun with more than twice the damage stats of my old gun. I haven't had an opportunity to test it out yet but probably will soon.

I actually never tried those guns, I've kept one in my backpack just to have one gun for each ammo type but not bothered with it. I prefer bullets... sniper rifles (they get better later... especially with points in Guns), my heavy revolver (a bit later in game) and an assault rifle of some sort. I had a rocket launcher in my last playthrough too that I used for those big Dragoon mechs and shit. Also rocket pistols (a legendary one even) that... I never tried.

I don't care for all the Plasma in this game either, it makes it hard to distinguish enemies and team mates with everyone burning from plasma.

It's not bad, but the ammo doesn't seem to be readily available.

This is where I'm at now, I'm supposed to convenience this guy with the potassium permanganate stained lips to go to the bridge. I already found his house and got the information from the computer in there, then I went back to talk to him. But I went though all the dialogue choices twice to make sure I went down every path, and he still declines going to the bridge. Yet he remains the objective.

At some stage of that conversation, you probably don't have enough Speech skill or something to get the conversation choice you need. I didn't do that quest, things like that are just one way to traverse. If you can't do it, you can just leave it in your quest log. Sloppy, but oh well. I've forgotten how I got past that in my last playthrough. I remember doing something/not doing something that resulted in the Vox Relay station crashing on the town of Fairfield though. Whatever I did or didn't do, I'm going to not do it like that again.

The bottom one looks like the plasma jump boots guy. They are coming in handy already.

I have zero speech skill, just like in real life sometimes lol! An alternative to that I read about is to do 'The Brain Benders of Auntie's Choice' side quest, but looks like that has it's own prerequisites. But it also sounds like there are other ways to get across the bridge, so that the whole 'For Whom the Bridge Tolls' quest can be skipped (except for the first one if you want to get the jump shoes):

Just saw this post in the same thread, not sure if it would truly work though:

I didn't encounter the boots quest through any quest line, I just stumbled across the people on the platform and it started that "A Final Death for Gravity" quest. After taking that quest, you could probably just say fuck those clowns on the platform, you already have the boots

"Alternatively, if you have the shield...." <--- now I remember, that's how I got there in my first playthrough. Following the security chief Kaur (not that asshole Auntie's Choice administrator who wants to get Mental Refreshment technology). Go to a facility to print an access card from a terminal, then go to the Automech Repair Facility and you get that Zyranium shield thing in there by doing a quest for someone in the maintenance shop. (memory is vague)

That's exactly where I am right now, I saved right before going in the Automech Repair Facility. I have the card so they'll let me in. I guess I'm doing it the same way as last time, then  (hopefully I can still avoid crashing the station... I don't remember what I didn't do)
