Hey mike was shooting around the net and came across this os/window manager ever hear of it? looks pretty cool..in particular the way the pager is set up..looks handy.it's called athene.you have to buy it if you want the os,but you can freely download the window manager part of it.was wondering what your take on it would be.

Thanks, yes I have heard of that and seen screenshots. It looks like the different styles each have different functionality. (The Wintel ones are the only ones with the standard sort of taskbar and start menu)
I just downloaded the tarball to extract and see if there's more info and I may try it in Vmware, except that it's not really Free Software. It's free to download, but with that kind of license I can't see myself using it or recommending it. I don't really like a "black box". I still haven't found the source code, though it seems it's available to developers according to their FAQs and license. Now that I've extracted the tarball, I see it's not an ISO but installation files. It is something to run on an existing Linux install. (the commercial product is a bootable CD that installs a Linux based distro) This is something we're just supposed to take a leap of faith on. Just run the thing as root, and then we'll tell you how to install it? Hahahah. Quote:
![]() There's a Windows version too. It might be more interesting to try it there as a GUI replacement. |

Well, I've been playing with this. It's not too bad, and didn't harm the PCLinuxOS VM I used to test it.

i like the way the wintel theme looks mike..nice that it doesn't screw up the original os..was afraid it might be like dropline gnome, adding alot of stuff, and worse yet replacing things..that might screw up the system if uninstalled.

Bah, the Windows version isn't very interesting at all. It's more of a demo mode that runs in a window. Not a shell replacement.
