Re: Health Issues
Thanks GK. Sorry to hear you had to go through that. My older brother had a heart attack and a coronary bypass a number of years ago.

Re: Case Pictures
Both of your builds look great! I like the subtle lighting in your main system. These newer cases are sure forcing us to do clean cable management. I never used to bother with that lol!

EVGA stopped making video cards recently, they reportedly got tired of being abused by Nvidia.

Re: pretty bad amdgpu fault last night
In the past I often used Gimp, it loads PDF's as regular images that I'd edit, then export out as a PDF again. It was a bit cumbersome but it worked.

Re: Fractal Focus case and Motherboards
Yeah I don't recall it giving me any trouble I haven't seen before, I do remember the i/o shield was a tight fit but a lot of them are - the ones with the older style separate i/o shield. It can be a struggle to get all four corners to snap into place, and if one corner isn't in quite all the way it...

Being that it's that channel I can't say I'm surprised lol! I rarely watch his stuff, especially after all the scummy stuff they've done.

Terminator 1 Quote
I saw this posted on FB:
In 1984, Sarah Connor told Kyle Reese “They cannot make things like that yet.”
Kyle Reese said “Not yet. Not for about 40 years.”
That would be now. In 2024.

Re: Fractal Focus case and Motherboards
I have three of those cases, I've mostly used AMD based MSI boards in them - my primary gaming machine is in one and it has an MSI MPG X570 Gaming Edge board (got it in 2019). One has an old Supermicro board, and the other one currently has the same Intel based MSI board as you have (I'm now using t...

Re: Need to use display compositor
Mate's compositor (Marco I think) works really well in that DE, prior to using Mate on some machines I had been disabling compositing everywhere for years, aside from occasionally testing Wayland where it can't be disabled. In Plasma it still significantly hurts stability, especially in Plasma 6, I'...

Re: Unreal Tournament 2004 - 20 Years Old
That happens here too, during prolonged outages like the 24 hour+ outages I had to go through, the Internet connection goes out. Before solar the only way I'd know about it was via a text message on my phone from the ISP. It's running well for me in the Steam version, all I had to do was turn up the...

Unreal Tournament 2004 - 20 Years Old
LGR did a look back at Unreal Tournament 2004 (as well as UT 2003) now that the game is 20 years old. UT 2003 is one UT release I never saw, and now I see I didn't miss much. I still like to go back and play UT 2004 once in a while.

Re: Crash
Thanks, I see Mesa was updated in Slackware today: mesa-24.0.5-x86_64-1.txz I'll see how that does for now. The compositor occurred to me as a possible culprit since I did still have it enabled so I disabled it. I still had freezing videos though. This does seem to be limited to Slackware, and Slack...

Re: Crash
Thanks Grogan. I'm pretty sure I was in kernel 6.8.4 at the time that happened, but on reboot, before I ran dmesg, it booted into the old LTS kernel despite my grub settings to boot the last booted kernel. It's a Radeon RX 6750 card that was trouble free in another machine for a long time and used f...

I noticed the last couple days in Slackware that YT videos would occasionally freeze while the audio continued. Then tonight both screens suddenly shutoff. I couldn't drop to a TTY, it wasn't responsive and ended up having to force a reboot. I didn't see anything obvious on running dmesg, except for...

Re: pretty bad amdgpu fault last night
I think that MSI board has the worst implementation of UEFI I've ever worked with, it's much better on my Gigabyte board. But UEFI in general isn't that great. I remember the first time I encountered it during a distro install, I found it disgusting to be forced to have a Microsoft file system on my...

Re: pretty bad amdgpu fault last night
One way to find out while leaving your current Arch install intact would be a second Arch install on a second drive, it could just be some small cheap drive just for testing purposes. Then you could see first hand if it makes enough of a difference to bother with. If the difference isn't that signif...
